Meeting the Moment
Rochester, N.Y. — 10/23/2025 — As New York faces persistent teacher shortages, Roberts Wesleyan University has taken a significant step to expand access to teacher certification across the state.
The university’s dual-certification Master of Education in Childhood or Adolescence and Special Education programs are now offered fully online, removing geographic barriers for aspiring teachers, particularly those in rural and underserved areas.
A recent national analysis from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce predicts the U.S. will face a shortfall of 5.3 million college-educated workers by 2032, including a deficit of more than 600,000 teachers. The report underscores an urgent need to prepare more credentialed educators, especially in high-demand subject areas and communities that struggle to attract certified teachers.
In New York, this reality hits close to home. Many districts outside major metro areas continue to face difficulties filling classrooms in subjects like special education, math, and science.
By offering this program fully online, we’re removing one of the biggest barriers to entering the profession: location. We’re meeting future teachers where they are, so they can meet students where they are. Additionally, by reducing the total number of credit hours, we are addressing the financial barrier, too.
Flexible, Accredited, and Purpose-Driven
The dual-certification structure of the M.Ed. program enables students to earn initial teacher certification in Childhood or Adolescence and Special Education (All Grades), broadening their impact and employability from the start.
In addition, Roberts recently reduced the total credit hours required for completion, allowing students to graduate faster and begin teaching sooner, while maintaining rigorous academic and practical preparation.
Through virtual coursework, supervised field experiences, and mentorship from experienced faculty, students gain both the academic and practical preparation needed to enter the classroom confidently. Roberts’ approach reflects the university’s mission to prepare thoughtful, service-oriented leaders who transform their communities, whether that’s in Rochester, the North Country, or the Southern Tier.
Competitive Price
Roberts Wesleyan University offers two clear pathways for students to save on tuition: a 25% Corporate Partners Discount and a 25% Alumni Discount for this master’s degree. With either discount applied, tuition costs align competitively with those of state universities, making a character-focused education more accessible than ever.
